Tom Kaulitz was first-born, reportedly ten minutes before his twin brother Bill. Tom started playing the guitar under the instruction of his step-father Gordon Trümper. Around the same time his twin brother Bill started wearing makeup and dyeing his hair, Tom started growing his trademark dreadlocks. While seemingly not as flamboyant as his brother Bill, Tom's Jamaican-inspired hairdo made him no less an outcast in the small town of Loitsche where the young twins dreamed together of something more.

Later Tom would develop a distinct hip-hop flair, sporting baggy pants hung low and oversized shirts. Usually he also covered his long dreads with a stylish lid from his extensive collection of logo baseball caps. After almost nine years, Tom cut off his famous dreads and has since worn his hair in a braided corn row style.
