Gustav has been playing the drums since he was five years old. At twelve, Gustav and thirteen year old friend Georg Listing were in the audience during a performance by brothers Bill and Tom Kaulitz. The two approached the twins after the show and soon after the four formed a band.

Onstage, Gustav keeps the band on the beat with his solid drumming. Offstage, his short, solid build, quiet demeanor and almost nerdy average guy good looks, provide the perfect counter to the tall, lanky and flamboyant frontman Bill Kaulitz

A man of few words, Gustav is known among Tokio Hotel fans world-wide for his virtual silence during interviews and public appearances.
